Romania has officially commenced funding under the EU's European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF) until 2020. On 21 April in Tulcea, the launch of the Fisheries and Maritime Affairs Operational Programme 2014-2020 took place at an event organised by the Romanian Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Tulcea City Council. It was attended by government officials, including the head of the Management Authority, as well as potential beneficiaries and local authorities. The EMFF supports fishermen in the transition towards sustainable fishing, helps coastal communities to diversify their economies, and finances projects that create jobs and improve the quality of life along European coasts.
Under the Romanian programme, the EU will spend more than euro 168 million to increase production in aquaculture and processing, preserve biodiversity and ensure environmental protection, and to maintain and create jobs, particularly in the fishing sector.
