Integrating AQUAculture and FIsheries MAnagement towards a sustainable regional development in the Baltic Sea Region

AQUAFIMA LogAQUAFIMA is an EU funded project through the Baltic Sea Region Programme 2007-2013. The overall objective is to integrate aquaculture and fisheries management for the sustainable regional development in the Baltic Sea Region (BSR).

The project aims at: bringing together political decision makers, scientists, representatives of fishery and environmental organizations and other stakeholders (e.g. regional and local authorities, ICES, Baltic RAC, HELCOM; discussing and comparing current national and EU fishery policies and alternative approaches, such as an area-based fishery management system; developing and evaluating stocking/restocking measures for different fish species; determining the state of the art in aquaculture and its implementation in fishery management in the BSR; developing strategies to utilize the fisheries and aquaculture for the regional economic and tourism development and to integrate aquaculture in a sustainable spatial development; developing and implementing Baltic specific international aquaculture orientated professional education and skills; promoting the acceptance for aquaculture in the population; improving knowledge transfer of project results to other macro-regions, in and outside the EU.
