Pakyurek, based in Adana in the south of Turkey along the Mediterranean coast, produces a range of fish and seafood products for the domestic market and for export. However, one of the company’s most important items is land snails, which are exported to France.

Turkey produces more farmed trout than any other farmed species. Of the total farmed fish production, trout amounted to 45% in 2015 thanks to the almost 2,000 inland fish farms that exist across the country.

The company Noordzee farms seabass, seabream, and meagre in the Aegean Sea and the Mediterranean Sea, processing and exporting the fish to countries in Europe and to Russia. A planned expansion to its fish feed factory will contribute to the integration of operations enabling the company to maintain even closer control over all the production parameters.

The Turkish coastline is over 8,000 km long and it borders four seas, the Mediterranean in the south, the Black Sea in the north, and the Aegean Sea and the Sea of Marmara in the west. In addition, Turkey has plenty of inland water in the form of lakes, dam reservoirs, and rivers. These water resources yielded over 672,000 tonnes of fish in 2015 of which farmed fish amounted to just over a third.

Among the group companies is Agromey, a producer of seabass and seabream with its own feed manufacturing plant, on-growing sites for the fish, processing and packaging facilities, as well as sales and marketing divisions that trade the fish on markets within Turkey as well as around the world.

Kilic Seafood is synonymous with the Turkish fish farming sector. The company is fully integrated producing at all stages of the farmed seafood value chain. The main production is seabass, seabream, meagre, and rainbow trout. In addition to on-growing facilities for farmed fish, Kilic has hatcheries, feed production units, packaging facilities and processing factories producing a range of sophisticated items. Since 2015 the company has also been farming tuna, on-growing the fish in cages in the sea off Karaburun near Izmir.

Production in Turkish fisheries was lower in 2014 than the previous year while aquaculture production was stable. Fisheries production fell by over a fifth maintaining the overall trend of the last decade, but farmed fish, despite a sizeable decrease in the production of farmed trout, remained at broadly the same level as in 2013 thanks to increases in output of seabass and seabream.

Hasan Girenes is President of Agriculture and Fisheries in the Yasar Group, a Turkish industrial conglomerate. He is also Chairman of the Izmir Fish Producers Association. Fish farming is an important industry in Turkey, where 230,000 tonnes of fish were cultivated in 2014 of which 83,000 tonnes were exported. Although aquaculture plays an inceasingly important role in supplying the world with healthful protein, the industry suffers from a negative image. Agromey is among the largest producers of seabass and seabream in Turkey with an annual production capacity of 15,000 tonnes. The company, like other big producers, is integrated with its own feed production division, fish cultivation, processing, packaging and distribution.

In a sector crowded with farming and processing companies Akuvatur stands out for its approach, which differs in several respects from other producers. Owned by an academic, Dr Haluk Tuncer, Akuvatur has concentrated on species other than seabass and seabream. In addition, the company grows fish to sizes that are usually larger than the typical market-sized fish.
