The SAFE is a Horizon Europe project that aims to make fish farming in freshwater more environmentally friendly and financially sustainable. This will be done by finding new ways to use waste from recirculating aquaculture systems and integrated multi-trophic aquaculture systems. The project will also improve the management and governance of these systems, and demonstrate these solutions at a local and regional level across the EU. The project will focus on endangered species such as European native crayfish, as well as diversifying the types of fish farmed. The project will also compare the EU’s fish farming practices to those in China and share knowledge to improve sustainability in both places. SAFE will also provide training and support for the freshwater fish farming industry.
Eurofish is the coordinator of the project and has been involved in every step of the project, from the conceptual design and application to the practical implementation. In addition to coordinating the project Eurofish is also responsible for the dissemination, communication and exploitation. The project started in 2022 and will stretch until 2026.
