New pond farming guide released at Eurofish Governing Council meeting

The twenty-fifth session of the Eurofish Governing Council concluded last week. The event attracted 37 participants representing 22 countries and FAO. Representatives from twelve member countries (Poland declined) and from ten observer countries, both EU and non-EU, were in attendance. Members expressed their satisfaction with Eurofish’s performance in 2025. The organisation participated in several EU- and bilaterally-funded projects that addressed topics related to aquaculture, fisheries, and maritime data analysis, to value addition for freshwater aquaculture side streams, to algae production, to seafood sustainability, and to consumer confidence in seafood products. Eurofish has also published a Industry guide on pond fish farming, an important activity in several member countries, the electronic version of which will be made freely available shortly. Some of the projects will roll over into 2026, but the work programme for 2026, which the Governing Council approved, also showed projects with new areas of focus. Among the benefits for the member countries is the Eurofish annual conference which this year will be held in Istanbul in June and will focus on processing, certification, and trade of seafood. The second day of the event was dedicated primarily to financial matters and after the representatives’ comments were incorporated the budget for 2026 was approved. Next year’s Governing Council will be held on 28 and 29 January.
