The expertise of EUROFISH includes the entire spectrum of the post-harvest handling of the catch, as well as aquaculture and trade and markets. The type of activities implemented as projects include market and sector studies and surveys, transfer of know-how through organising conferences, workshops and training courses, and the production of new publications.

Thanks to its highly professional and dedicated staff, as well as a large network of experts and contacts in Central and Eastern Europe, the Mediterranean and Balkan countries, EUROFISH is a partner of choice for many fisheries and aquaculture related projects, especially for its member countries. The EUROFISH staff is fluent in 10 European languages (Croatian, Danish, English, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Norwegian, Spanish and Swedish).

Eurofish project activities focus on four core areas: Post-harvest Fisheries, Aquaculture, Trade and Markets, and Dissemination.

Below is a selection of current projects.

VeriFish – Verifiable Indicators for Sustainable Seafood 

VeriFish is a Horizon Europe project under the EU Mission “Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030” that develops a science-based framework of verifiable indicators to improve how seafood sustainability is assessed and communicated. 

Project Duration: 2024 – 2026


European Market Observatory for Fisheries and Aquaculture Products (EUMOFA) 

EUMOFA is an initiative of the EU Commission – Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG MARE). It is an online tool for the EU fisheries and aquaculture sector, which aims at increasing market transparency and efficiency, and at analysing EU market dynamics.

Project Duration: 2021 – 2026


EMODnet Human Activities 4

EMODnet Human Activities aims to facilitate access to existing marine data on activities carried out in EU waters, by building a single-entry point for geographic information on 20 different themes. The main objective of EMODnet Human Activities is to make available information on the geographical position, spatial extent and attributes of a wide array of marine and maritime human activities throughout Europe.

Project Duration: 2026 – 2029


FIDEL – A ground-breaking Framework for Integrated Data-Driven IntelligEnce in Fisheries Monitoring, Control and Surveillance 

FIDEL aims to modernise and strengthen fisheries Monitoring, Control and Surveillance (MCS) systems through advanced digital solutions, with a particular focus on small-scale fisheries, recreational fisheries, and EU long-distance fleets operating under Sustainable Fisheries Partnership Agreements (SFPAs).

Project Duration: 2026 – 2030


SAFE – SmartAqua4Future 

SAFE is a Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Action (RIA) that aims to reduce the environmental impact and improve the viability of freshwater aquaculture through circular economic approaches. The project focuses on valorising solid and liquid waste streams from recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) and integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) systems, while improving management practices and integrating waste-derived resources into the aquaculture feed chain.

Project Duration: 2022 – 2026


AlgaePro BANOS – Accelerating algae product developments in Baltic and North Sea

The AlgaeProBANOS project has been created with the mission to accelerate the development of sustainable and innovative algae-based products in the Baltic and North Sea, to make the EU a world-leader in algae product development, and to support coastal societies and local economies.

Project Duration: 2023 – 2027


FishEUTrust – Boosting consumer trust in seafood

FishEUTrust aims to develop. among other outputs, ways to guarantee seafood product safety, quality, and traceability. The purpose is to counter scepticism among some consumers about fresh and farmed seafood.

Project duration: 2022 – 2026

SeaDeep – Sustainable energy advancement through digitalisation for energy efficient production in aquaculture and fisheries

The SeaDeep project targets some of the major contributing factors to climate change in aquaculture and fisheries, aiming to lower emissions, optimise energy use, safeguard marine ecosystems, and strengthen resilience against rising energy prices and regulatory pressures.

Project Duration: 2026 – 2029
