The Federation of European Aquaculture Producers (FEAP) is drawing attention to the growing issue of mislabelled fish species on the international fish market. Recent market observations revealed that barramundi (Lates calcarifer), a species of sea bass native to the Indo-Pacific region, is often falsely marketed and labelled as sea bass in Asian and Middle Eastern countries, creating an association with the established reputation and market value of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). Accurate labelling supports informed consumer choice and ensures the integrity of international seafood markets. Misleading marketing disproportionately harms European aquaculture producers who adhere to stringent environmental, food safety, and traceability standards, thereby threatening fair competition in international trade. FEAP therefore calls on the relevant authorities, retailers and industry stakeholders worldwide to ensure that seafood products are correctly identified by their common and scientific names. In the case of Lates calcarifer, the correct terms according to FAO standards are barramundi, giant seaperch, or Asian seabass, which distinguish it correctly from European seabass.
