At the Global Fishery Forum & Seafood Expo 2018, there will be an opening ceremony for International Year of the Salmon, which has been established by the world community of scientists and ecologists and will include a series of events designed to resolve the problems of maintaining global stocks of these types of fish. The International Year of the Salmon opening ceremony will be held on the Forum’s third day and will be attended by Deputy Minister of Agriculture and head of the Federal Agency for Fishery Ilya Shestakov, NASCO President Jóannes Hansen, NPAFC President Suam Kim, NPAFC Executive Director Vladimir Radchenko, Director of the Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO) Kirill Kolochin and Director of WWF Russia Igor Chestin. Specialists first spoke of the need for this project over ten years ago. Co-operation between countries will create an opportunity to clarify many aspects of the ecology of salmon, the study of which requires considerable resources considering the salmon’s extensive natural habitat and their complex life cycle. Within the scope of International Year of the Salmon, from autumn 2018 to the end of 2019, it is planned to implement a complex of measures base on proposals made by the North Pacific Anadromous Fish Commission (NPAFC) and the North Atlantic Salmon Conservation Organization (NASCO). The programme includes scientific expeditions and other events designed, among other things, to popularize research and ecological education, to develop exchange of information about the state of popularization and the industry. An important component of the project remains the fight against the illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing and to control the fish catch.

Global Fishery Forum & Seafood Expo
Fishery experts from all over the world will assemble at the Global Fishery Forum
Representatives of the world’s largest fisheries and food organizations confirmed their participation in the Second Global Fishery Forum. In 2018, the Forum’s topic is ‘Global Fishing Activities 2050: resources, markets, technologies’. An extensive discussion of issues in international cooperation in long-term planning and management of fish resources is planned for the Forum. “Given the integration of Russian fisheries in global fishing, collaboration with foreign partners and international fisheries organizations is of great significance. Currently, over 800 thousand tonnes of aquatic bioresources are harvested in exclusive economic zones of foreign states, in convention areas, and in the open waters of the World Ocean; it is essentially a quarter of the entire Russian catch,” said Ilya Shestakov, Deputy Minister of Agriculture of the Russian Federation – Head of the Federal Agency for Fishery. Many issues that are important for the sector are within the purview of international fisheries organizations in charge of fishing in individual regions or of harvesting specific resources. Representatives of the key international organizations will assemble at the GFF 2018 to consider topical problems in the fishing industry: Fred Kingston, Executive Secretary, Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization (NAFO); Jacques Verborgh, President of the North-East Atlantic Fisheries Commission (NEAFC); Anne Christine Brusendorff, General Secretary of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES); Suam Kim, President of the North Pacific Anadromous Fish Commission (NPAFC); Jóannes Hansen, President of the North Atlantic Salmon Conservation Organization (NASCO); Ali Gucu, Coordinator of the BlackSeaFishProject of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM). -
Ilya Shestakov, Deputy Minister of Agriculture of the Russian Federation – Head of the Federal Agency for Fishery, held a press conference in Moscow where he announced the extended business program of the 2nd Global Fishery Forum. The head of the Federal Agency for Fishery dwelled on the matters of preparing for the Forum and on the key topic of the upcoming event: “Global fishing activities 2050”; he also spoke about the achievements of Russia’s current fishery sector. “After the first successful Forum held last year, we are scaling the event up and our discussion topics are becoming even more daring. We will discuss whether it is possible for the current agreements and international fishery organizations to prevent the impending tensions in the global food security; we will also focus on the possibilities of long-term forecasting,” Mr. Shestakov said. The Forum’s business programme for 13 September opens with an international conference on ‘Issues in commercial straddling stocks fishing activities’. World level experts and scientists will discuss how to make optimum use of the straddling fish stocks without detriment to populations, will come up with new proposals for sustaining fish diversity and organizing sustainable fishing. 14 September will see the Forum’s key event: the plenary session ‘Global fishing activities 2050: resources, markets, technologies’. The participants will include Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Alexei Gordeyev, Deputy Minister of Agriculture of the Russian Federation and Head of the Federal Agency for Fishery Ilya Shestakov, Deputy Prime Minister and Fisheries Minister of the Faroe Islands Høgni Hoydal, Assistant Director-General of the FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Department Árni Mathiesen, General Secretary of the ICES Anne Christine Brusendorff and RAS Vice President Andrei Adrianov.
