In 2024, Estonia sold over 963 metric tonnes of farmed fish, and a record-setting 21 tons of fish roe. Fish roe, unfertilised fish eggs, are commonly harvested from rainbow trout, which was the nation’s most farmed and sold fish, contributing to 87% of the farmed yield in 2024. Other commonly farmed species in Estonia include crayfish, at 17%, and tench, European eel, and African catfish. Additionally, Anton Kardanov, an analyst with Statistics Estonia, noted that fish roe sales nearly doubled from 2023, reaching a value of approximately EUR680,000. It is possible that this sharp increase is due to a near EUR4 decline in the price of fish roe per kilogram. Over the past two years, Estonia has shown a rise in quantity of fish sold after being in a decline from 2019-2022. Although prior to 2024, 2021 set a record for fish roe sales, the year saw an immense drop off in sales of rainbow trout and other fish. Despite 2024’s success though,
Mr Kardanov notes that increases in food prices have now reached the fish farming sector, pointing to an increase of nearly 30% in price per kilogram of farmed fish.
