The introduction of catfish to waters in which they are not native presents a real threat, as it is a highly adaptive species that often outcompetes the local fauna. The challenge of dealing with them is illustrated by Lake Garda, where a significant rise in catches of the species has now led to a meeting between regional councillors, fishermen, technicians and local institutions. The regional intervention not only explored potential solutions and mitigation measures but also emphasised the potential economic opportunity the species can present. Catfish already has a consolidated market in Northern European countries, giving professional fishermen a viable alternative to the native species that are under pressure. By targeting the fish, participants of the meeting concluded, containing the environmental impact and economic relief for threatened livelihoods could be achieved together.
